Single Crochet Triangle/Diamond: How to

I am working on a new crochet blanket. I wanted to try something different so I choose a 3D Illusion Pattern. I think it will be fun. I’ll share the full pictures and pattern when I’m done but the main component of the blanket is diamond pieces, so I wanted share those now. I’m having fun making them.

In order to make a diamond you need to know how to make a triangle. So we will start there. For my project I’m using 100% acrylic yarn with a 5mm hook. You can use whatever yarn and hook that you want, it will just affect the size of the finished project. This tutorial will show yo how to make a triangle/diamond using single crochet stitches. (You can use the same pattern to make one with double crochet stitches as well, just replace sc with dc in the pattern)

Abbreviations for this tutorial:

  • ch = chain
  • st = stitch
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc = single crochet
  • sc2tog = Single Crochet 2 Together (or a decrease single crochet)

Row 1: Chain 2. On the second chain from the hook make 2 sc, ch 1 and turn.

Row 2: 1 sc in the first st and 2 sc in the last st, ch 1 and turn.

Row 3: 1 sc in first two st. and 2 sc in the last st, ch 1 and turn.

Row 4: make 1 sc in each of the st except the last one, make 2 sc in the last st, ch 1 and turn.

Next rows: repeat instructions of row 4 until you’re happy with your triangle’s size.

My triangle is 11 rows, each side measures about 3.25 in.

If you are only making a triangle this is where you finish off your triangle. Cut the yarn about 2 inches from the hook, and pull the yarn all the way through.

If you want to make a diamond, don’t cut the yarn, chain 1, turn, and follow the rest of the pattern… You will need an uneven amount of rows in your triangle for the diamond pattern. Then all you have to do is decrease each row by one stitch. The decreases is made at the end of each row in the last two stitches of the row.

Directions for sc2tog stitch. This stitch turns two stitches into one.

  • Insert hook in st. yarn over and pull hook through loop (you have 2 loops on hook now) just like the beginning of a sc.
  • Instead of doing the second part of the sc, insert hook in the next st. Pull hook through loop (you have 3 loops on hook now).
  • Finish off the stitch by yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook.

First row of decrease: start out with sc across the row until you reach your last two st. Then do a sc2tog st in those st, then ch 1 and turn your work.

Repeat until you reach a row with only two stitches, ch 1 and turn your work.

Last row Make 1 sc2tog in the remaining 2 stitches and ch 1.

Congratulations! You can now make a triangle and a diamond. If you need any assistance leave a comment, I would be happy to help!

I will link my blanket when I complete it! I now have to go make lots of diamonds 🙂
